The City of Blythe, with a population of a little over 18,000, sits comfortably on the Colorado River at Interstate 10. The Palo Verde Valley is comprised of approximately 100,000 acres, supporting a population of 30,000, with agriculture being the primary industry along with recreation activities on the Colorado River and in the Desert. Two State Prisons west of Blythe add significantly to the economic base of the Community. During the winter months visitors from snow bound states come to the Blythe Area swelling the winter population to over 71,000.
The Blythe Rotary Club was chartered June 28, 1947 by the Chino Rotary Club. Blythe Rotary has a membership that ranges from 50 to 60 active members. Blythe Rotary has a long and active history in the Community and surrounding area. Scholarships from $8000 to $10,000 are awarded annually. Blythe Rotary sponsors an active forty plus member Interact Club. Additionally, the Blythe Rotary Club has two sister clubs, one in Mexicali and another in Eritrea, Africa. Through matching grants the Mexicali Club has received clothing for distribution, hospital equipment and commercial laundry equipment for an hospice. The Eritrea Club has been provided Encyclopedias with transportation costs provided by Blythe, other endeavors in Africa include 100 biology books to professors and teachers in five African countries, providing 210 prosthetics to crippled youngsters in Nairobi and water wells in Kenya. Another matching grant program initiated by Blythe Rotary was the establishment of a Village Bank in Ecuador in 2003. In 2007 Blythe Rotary initiated a matching grant program to provide a commercial laundry to an Hospice in Mexicali. Blythe Rotary is also an active supporter of the Rotary Group Study Exchange, Youth Exchange, Friendship Exchanges, RYLA, and the Four Way Speech Contest. Blythe Rotary ranks high among District Clubs in giving to Rotary Foundation and has been the home club of three District Governors, the last being Wayne Cusick (1996-97)
- The Object of Rotary The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and in particular, to encourage and foster:
- FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
- SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society.
- THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;
- FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
